Launched in June 2007, The O2 is the world’s most popular venue based on ticket sales. It’s a new, city-within-a-city for Londoners and the world to explore and enjoy.
The centrepiece of The O2 is an indoor arena for up to 20,000 fans. It will host up to 150 world-class music, entertainment and sport events in its first year of opening. The O2 arena attracts a variety of high-profile artists, with Kylie and Bryan Adams already confirmed to perform in 2008. It will also host a series of high profile sports events, and is an official venue for the 2012 Olympics, hosting both the gymnastic and basketball finals. The 2009 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will also be held at the venue.
The venue draws on the strengths of the two partners involved in the development. O2 brings expertise in mobile music, sport and entertainment as well as a customer-base of 41 million in the UK, Germany, Ireland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. AEG has a strong track record in creating successful entertainment destinations and putting on events world-wide. For example, AEG operates STAPLES Centre in Los Angeles, which hosts more than 250 live events annually including widely televised shows such as The Academy Awards, The Grammys, NBA Finals and WTA Tennis finals, to name a few. The STAPLES Centre has attracted more than 20 million guests in less than six years.
