Luis J. Bastida joined Telefónica in 2002 after working as Chief Financial Officer and later Managing Director of Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, the multinational Spanish banking group.
Mr Bastida is a lawyer who graduated from E.S.T.E University in San Sebastian, Spain and also holds an MBA from Columbia University in New York.
As part of the Telefónica Group he has worked mainly as an Independent Consultant and served as a Director for different companies in Latin America. He is also Chairman of the ‘Aventura Solidaria Foundation’ (a non profit organisation that works in Mozambique) whilst also teaching seminars and writing articles on business economics, mainly in the areas of ‘Corporate Strategy’ and ‘Organisation’. He is a founding member of the Strategic Planning Association of Spain (AESPLAN) and a member of the Spanish Financial Analyst Institute.
Mr Bastida was appointed to the board of Telefónica Europe as a Non-Executive Director on 23 April 2008.
